Hi all,

This is what I made when I was bored saturday morning.
Hope you like it, although it isn't exactly Mars related.

I only put it here as an example for other Sketchup users.
All parts are made as components and things that work together is grouped and put in separate layers that you can turn on and off for easy view of the model.

It is not nearly done, but it gives some insight to the idea of a classic rotary lock.

I hope some of you find it useful, or just fun. :O)

Next project is to make an addition to it that will allow me to change the code of the lock without changing the discs.

After that it is time for prototyping.
Can't wait to have my very own home made safe. :O)

Enjoy!

I will post some more pictures tomorrow, explaining the inner workings of the lock.

Cool!  (This computer can't get Sketchup so I'm forced to look at photos.)  But that looks interesting.  It would be fun to make say a 3D bank...

Cool!  That makes sense... at least a little.  :P  Very interesting model... so how many hours did you spend in this?  IT would be fun to make a safe out of household matireals.. but it couldn't be card board...

This model took me about half an hour to model after I had thought out how to make the lock work.
That part took a little longer, as it diverts a little from the other lock designs I have seen.
My basic idea was to make the parts as simple as possible to manufacture as I (you've guessed it by now) intend to build it myself.

-But first I want to refine the design a little more, by making a mechanism that allows me to change the code without disassembling the lock. :O)

Thanks!  Yes this makes sense now...  I would suggest making say a paper or something with cheap matireals before using metal/wood just to make sure you really understand it.  And how to build it.

@Wolflink: That would be awesome!  If you open the door you can enter the world!  That would be fun!  I suppose you could have a dynamic object that could act as a lock...

Don't worry Zam,

I intend to start with something real easy and cheap.
In fact, I will just cut up some old plastic cutting boards and put them in an old cigar box with some bolts acting as axles.

My grand total? Less than 1 dollar. ;O)
