The official release of the City of Dreams. Pictures and link.

Hello again! I have some good news, and some more good news.

First the good news, I have reexported my city after discovering several networking bugs in my city due to some unintentional network view components. This bug would have made it impossible to play with other people. The floating street-lamps have also been taken care of (thanks to Gub for pointing this out).

In the following days I may consider adding little objects around the city (such as news stands) and maybe even a central park. No guarantees though...

In case you haven't already discovered, Mars is fully operational again with the Master Server and NAT Facilitator behaving normally. In the event that it doesn't seem to be for you - empty your cache and restart your browser. If Aubrey decides to make an official announcement about this, I'll edit out this section of the post to prevent duplicate content.

What are you waiting for? Go join a server! :D

Sincerely,
Achilles

-------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone! This is the first release of my City of Dreams - a super large mega-city that can support a variety of activities. The City of Dreams has a couple hidden secrets. Feel free to explore around and test things out. Suggestions, comments, and critique is very much appreciated. This world may be a tad laggier than most, so please follow the suggestions below:

Suggestions

1) Do not modify the server settings (visibility & minimap) as they were fine-tuned to reduce the lag. If your computer is running fast, you can opt to change the visibility (and make it higher) though this is still not recommended.

2) Go into full-screen mode. Full screen reduces the lag very noticeably and in some cases has increased the FPS by about 50%. You can access full-screen in Mars Explorer by tapping 0 (zero) once. I highly recommend that you go into full screen mode BEFORE starting or entering a server as the starting camera swooping effect is quite graphics intensive.

Things to do (single player and multi-player)

Once Aubrey gets the master server list up and running again you can do a variety of activities with your friends in the City of Dreams. Below is what I quickly came up with:

1) Drag Racing. You can drag race down the main street (you should start at one of the ends where the cones are, and race to the other side). The main street is marked by one central yellow line, and two white lines on either side (it is the largest road in the city).

2) Hide and seek. You can turn off the badges (camouflage badges) and play hide 'n seek around the city. There are a lot of places to hide on the roofs and in the alleyways.

3) Skill-flying. See how long you can last without crashing into a building while weaving in-between the buildings while flying. This can also be done during dogfights as an added tactical maneuver.

Feel free to make up your own and post it below if you want.

A few statistics

- Number of buildings: 400
- Approximate polygon (tri) count: 6,000,000 -- 8,000,000

Some high-resolution images

Here are some high-res pictures I took of my city. The quality setting was on "Beautiful" and I was in full-screen.

Showing the expanse of the city.Looking down a street.Flying over the roof-tops.Looking out of an alleyway into a street.Looking up at the buildings looming above.Flying carefully in-between some buildings. One of the Unity 3 billboards around the map.A trash pile in one of the alleyways.

Excellent work!! this is a major shift forward for Mars exp. Only one thing I want to say to admin is be cautious you don't go down the same route as Paradise Paintball- that game was a brilliant beta until it was tweaked so much that the gameplay became dire & it lost its soul, I'd hate to see that happen to mars exp.

A suggestion..get some real world advertising on those billboards to fund some publicity for the game?..we need more players!

Thanks for making this great game even better.

I tried playing on it. I got stuck at the loading sceneinit screen for a long time. When I got in, it was really nice. I did find that I couldn't find a building twice. There was nothing to use as a landmark. One of the reasons I don't like the Sands of Time as much is because there is nothing to recognize a patch of desert by. They all blend together. Try and make some buildings and streets stand out more. Make them lime green or add signage.

More FPS tips:

Use the App. If you don't already, I don't know why. The app is *Usually* more reliable server list wise as well. Since it is independent of the browser it also runs faster.

Set the screen resolution lower. This might just work for the app, but I usually run Mars in a 800X600 window, and I was able to run this city on Fantastic at 20 fps after taking out the fog. It was 35 beforehand. You *should* be able to mess with the resolution in full screen as well.
To change the resolution, in the web browser you must change it from the Game Settings menu from within a server. In the App, you can also hold the Option/Alt key before the App opens and access a settings menu where you can change resolution.

Nice world. From a detail standpoint, it's awesome, but it's also repetitive on the ground-level. Might wanna try some variation, maybe a translation to some suberebs? I dunno.

This has been rated 3.5 out of 5.

EDIT: It's also repetitive up top. You created a few buiding molds, and stuck with 'em. I wanna see a small store on one side, and then have to crane my neck (or buggy sight) up to see the top of a HUGE skyscraper. Not "Oh, look, a tall building. Another one. Another one. Hey, there's a squatty, tall building with several water towers on top. Another one. Another one." Etc., etc.

Rating: 3/5.

Okay, that is incredible Achilles and thanks for sharing this world with us!

On the down side I agree with TigerStorm, this world could really benefit from variation. Now, I realize how much work you put in but yeah, variation balanced with size.

Suggestion - Unless it's there and I didn't find it, some open space would be great!
@ A plaza or town square (every city has one)
@ Vacant lots
@ Park

The car in the Unity billboard is a vintage Volvo 544 and believe it or not, my dream car, lol. 'twould be very funky if my buggy could adopt that shell! I know, not your job.

Regarding your suggestion of creating games inside this world, I performed a little laser handywork on some garbage cans by turning three of them upside down then I shot one into the sky.  :)

This city is awesome!!!! I love the rigid-body stuff! The minute detail is awesome!

On the streets, it is kind of bland though. I think you should add some newsstands, or anything like that that you would find in a big city. I understand why the buildings don't have insides, but why not have an entrance to the building with a door that doesn't open? I agree with some other people that a courtyard would make the city a lot better!

Maybe you could have entrances to subway stations underground with no actual train or a track, they wouldn't have to be very detailed. Maybe make some stairs up to the entrances of some buildings.

Also, I think one very, very tall skyscraper would finish off your city. It would be so cool to be on top of that skyscraper, and look down on the rest of the city!

Maybe you knew this, but all the streetlights are above the sidewalk, floating. :)

Yay! Finally this has been released. I've been looking forward to this for a while! I really love that a map like this has come to mars.

One thing: The duplication of the buildings isn't obvious from the ground, but from the sky, it is very clear that there are only 5-6 models in the entire map. Maybe add some little tweaks to each building, like a different antenna on top of the 'skyscaper?'

I think version 2, if you make it, should have some other fun features, too. You should be able to go a few buildings to hide. I also really like the alleyways. I agree with the posts above me (sorry can't remember who said this) that you should have more city-like features, like plazas and parks.

Overall, 4 of 5 stars for me.

great idea, and i would like to suggest a few things.  (they are mainly about the parking ramps)

suggestions of chaos:

#1: jump ramps on a few of the foors of the parkign ramps, so you can speed off and land on other rooftops, or maybe even other parking ramps

#2 i don't know if this is even possible, but the bots could have pre determined locations, there could be a jet on a heli pad, a couple buggies in the parking ramp, and maybe some tanks parked on the street. they would be dormant, until you add a bot, then one of them would spring to life. this way you don't have bots puppy gaurding you at the spawn point.

#3 underground parking? there could be a level or two that goes underground, and you could re emerge from a parking ramp, a manhole, pretty much anything.

well those are my ideas, i would love it if you would all give me some feedback

With the lag already, underground is slightly impractical at the moment... maybe for Syn3h though.

and jumps in the middle of a street? Not really.

The only problem with releasing the city as a package is that most people's comps will not be able to handle the super high poly count. Even for my new iMac, the lag in Unity was enormous and crashes occurred frequently.

Try using the application version. The world is rather extensive, and when it tries to start up the browser thinks Unity is not responding. The application will circumvent that problem.

It does. You have to wait a while for it to load the scene as there are tons of objects for Unity to position.

You should make some buildings where you can go inside of them. I believe that would make an awesome improvement.

This map should become a lot less laggy after I export it out with full lightmaps and occulsion culling. I am also thinking of redoing all the buildings (as the buildings shown are super low poly non UV mapped and painted) to something a little more asthetically pleasing :P
