A simple but nice feature

Perhaps the surface of the world could react to being hit by a laser? At the least a blackening of the surface, at best a physical dimple in the ground. It shouldn't be too hard to implement...

Would this be permanent, or would it fade like tire tracks do? Also, would it apply to vehicles and structures as well, or just plain dirt?

I think permanent and applying to everything but water and vehicles, but I'm flexible.

i think it would be nice if it applied to structure  but not to vehicles

Yeah, I wasn't thinking of vehicles, just the world/building itself.
Thanks!

Perhaps a black spot but not anything that would erode the surface and create a "pothole". Then again, imagine how many black dots would be all over a world with all the missed shots from new players (unless of course they faded like the tracks do)

I think it might be fun to create a "pothole". Though then it should probably fade after five seconds.

I don't know how a pothole could "fade" though. More of a continuous flattening out?

Yeah... It could just rise into the surface over say 30 seconds.

Well, thing is terrain just isn't quite like that. I suppose you something could be made to modify the terrain (as one usually does in unity) every time a shot hit, but I'm not sure that's entirely possible. How it would look on inclines might turn out not so well with the method I can think of. In addition, that sounds a bit... out of line of Aubrey's purpose. Keep in mind it's supposed to be a game of tag, as opposed to laser war.

However I don't see any harm in singing the terrain a wee bit. Some light little charring here and there could be a nice effect, I suppose.

Cheers

OK, if you can modify the terrain in unity, I have figured out an equation for making nice, smooth, round potholes in three dimensions at any angle.

I don't think it's violent, just logical; if lasers can flip the buggy (which has certainly happened to me), then why can't they dent sand or dirt? It would also add strategic elements to tag as kirbyfreak said. In my humble opinion, it would just be fun to be able to mess with it; for instance, one could write a message with their laser on the beaches of Unity Island ;)

Thanks for your input!

I like the idea of a small dimple that fades away after, say 10 seconds, because think of the strategies it will create!  If someone's chasing you, Blast a line behind you and watch the potholes make them tumble!  :D

There's a bit of an effect in this GTR protoype's ( http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4704910/JetPrototype.html ) shots, but noting on the terrain

Neat, but really, I hadn't intended anything so explosive. Thanks for showing me though!

Lol, it was actually my jet that I made a while back. The smooth camera following script seems to be messed up though.... http://marsxplr.com/view-7644

Realistically, the only thing I can imagine Aubrey implementing would be a textured bump effect. The effect would use a bumpmap (meaning that it LOOK bumpy you wouldn't feel it if you drove over it). Creating dents in the terrain mesh at run-time might get expensive (performance wise) - especially if you're trying to recalculate the mesh collider every time a buggy shoots.

You're right; I didn't think about that. I don't know much about unity, but would it work to have a combination of the two? For example you could have the non-colliding bump/dent for visual and then a small, almost-flat colliding cone that is pre-generated, but hides under the map until needed; only one or two would be created and the more recent craters would get the actual collision?. This must be possible with relatively little overhead considering how much rolling and colliding vehicles do, and these aren't even moving? This just makes sense to me from my programming experience, but I've never used Unity (or any game engine before). Nice jet by the way!

Instantiating a raised mound would be feasible as Aubrey already does this sort of stuff with the lasers, wheel marks, etc.

I'm quite not sure how it would look in the game though...

I'm sorry, I forgot a key detail, the mound would be transparent.

(Everything works in my mind--just getting it into writing is hard! ;))

Well, I just remembered, a key thing to bump maps is that it requires PIXEL lighting (the opposite of vertex lighting). In the Mars quality settings, pixel lighting is disabled until beautiful or so.

Hmmm... I do see your point (I've worked with OpenGL)... What about when rendering is less than beautiful, just sticking a 2D top-down image on the surface (like tracks), with the invisible "collision cone" we discussed earlier on top? It wouldn't be pretty, but few things are below beautiful settings...
