Just Some Ideas I Had
Submitted By Picard on 08/10/25
Mars Explorer, ,
This Feature Request originally posted in the "Mars Explorer" Group

Note: To save posts, I am posting any new ideas that occur to me on this one.

Most recent idea: Dust trails for the jet:

I was zooming along less than 10 ALT from the ground, when I thought of how a real jet would be leaving a plume of dust in its wake. This feature would be interesting, and could have tactical applications depending on how fast it would fade.

Aubrey,

I have a number of ideas for the game. I won't include the ones I've already posted about, but here are the rest:

Vehicles:

Mobile Sky Monster (Slow start, does not need a volcano to launch. Top speed somewhere in the thousands. Purpose: Carry vehicles to moons/space station, with a maximum capacity of anywhere from 5 to 9 other vehicles (assuming player number per server does not change.) Would need special sensor to indicate distance from target. (See Other)

Snowmobile: A belt driven small, reasonably fast vehicle. Maybe a transformation option for the buggy only. (For the why, see worlds)

Monitor: Sort of a surfboard type of vehicle. Limited propulsion, lasers are average. Used for lava surfing (See Terrain)

Worlds:

Ice cap: A polar world where most vehicles have trouble stopping. Exceptions: Hovercraft (already a fairly slow stopper, but since it hovers above the ice...) and Snowmobile: turns and stops fast in this terrain.

Canals: Could be filled with lava, or empty. Would have lots of long channels.

Terrain:

Lava waves, which make flying too low a problem, make it relatively impossible to stay submerged permanently (for buggies, that is. Submarine not affected), useful for surfing competitions. Reason: Mars has moons. Moons cause tides.

Moons: Mars' two moons, Phobos and Deimos, could be used instead of/as a supplement to Tsa6's proposed space station. They would be far from the surface (somewhere in the millions of ALT points) and fairly small, making them easy to miss without maps or distance indicators. Hence, a mobile Sky Monster would be needed. Could be a separate world (spaceport and moons). An image of Phobos is included.

Ice: For the Ice Cap world, slippery for most ground based vehicles.

Other:

Advanced sensors: For the Sky Monster, something that tells/shows how far from the target destination the Sky Monster is.

Tractor beam: for the space station, would allow relatively easy docking of shuttle/RP jet. Could be turned off in server settings by the host, and if activated, could be disabled in the game settings for an extra challenge.

Sincerely,

Picard.

PS: A larger, more detailed image of Phobos is available at http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/images/2008/details/phobos/PSP_007769_9010_IRB.jpg

in the 1,000,000's!!!!! i can barly make it up 15'000 ft!!!!!!!! and sitting in a shuttle for the five minutes it would take for it to reach iether of those moons is not my idea of fun.

the other ideas are good though, i like the waves idea!!!!

jet,

The high height is just a suggestion. However, Mars's moons are a great distance away from the surface. While Aubrey would make the final decision as to the location of the moons, the shuttle/rocket would have a high cruising speed, from 1-2 thousand MPH, maybe more. However, it would have to slow down when approaching the station. Luckily, since gravity decreases the further up you go, it would only have to keep increasing speed for a short time before it reached the moon. At the speed of 1500 MPH, the ALT points would fly by very quickly. About 30 seconds to get to the station (I think). Just remember to slow down!

Maybe, the moons ARE closer. That wouldn't stop him from making them if he wanted. There's no grass on Mars either, but that didn't stop him. Also, the moons could be made into separate worlds along with freestyle and foxholes. See: Mars Explorer: a very long list of ideas. He took a few of mine. It doesn't matter, I don't care if he does. As long as I play them someday, it'll all pay off..................myspace.com/scuderia63

These ideas are very... radical. There are few ideas which rely on current releases (or even future updates). Your other ideas rely on your previous ideas. The ideas seem fine to me, but they are just too complicated for now... Adding an all-new space station would be strange, as there are lots of other updates to be made. My suggestion is to let it rest and post them again when the flood of ideas have ceased a bit. (Your snow-terrain idea would be cool right now, though.)

this is strange, but oh well. When you go to future, look at the To Be Implemented list. Underneath the words, it says, "higher priority items on top, others may never happen. Anybody notice that "new worlds" is on the bottom of the list? And what is a bot block?

These are a lot more realistic than many I've seen. For the moons, maybe you could just have a certain altitude that just transports you to the moon world automaticly (moons could also be a starting option for a new game). Of course that would create issues if you were a server host... I don't know how that would work. All in all, fairly plausible.

Bot-Block is when you join a server and turn into one of hundereds of robots with no control over yourself.

To everyone who responded to this post: Thank you!

Jet,

Glad I could clear up your confusion.

Scuderia63,

If I reused some of your ideas, I apologize. Although I try to stay on top of reading posts, old and new, I do miss a few every now and then. I agree with you entirely, no matter who (re)posts the ideas, if we eventually play them, it will be worth it.

Olim,

Yes, the ideas are complex. However, I don't expect them to be worked on for a long time, maybe not until 3.0 (I sincerely hope that this game lasts well past its 10.0 Anniversary, and with such a loyal gaming community, I'm sure it will!)

Will,

Yes, they are realistic, but would take a long time to complete. Patience is a virtue, and there are probably still fun glitches waiting to be discovered in the underused Foxholes and Lava Racer levels. (Don't think they're underused? Check your game list: Most of them will be Freestyle. Its not that they're bad, its that they don't have giant volcanoes that can blow you sky high!)

And, last, but not least, Tsa6,

Actually, the rocket/shuttle wouldn't really cover that issue. The rocket is designed for vertical flight, not horizontal and vertical flight, and the carrier concept is meant to hover only at a norm of 2000 ALT points, with a maximum of 3-4 thousand.

Sincerely,

Picard

I recently had an idea about waves, which im not sure has been posted before or not, and it's also a bit like lava waves to i decided to post here. Plus this has some great ideas as well.

I was actually doing work at school when i saw a book on the table titled "Auto CAD 2009". The cover had a picture of a jet with these sort of colored lines surrounding it, like you'd see in a wind tunnel under testing. The picture looked so magnificent to me, it gave me an epiphany. Not only should there be lava waves, but vehicle waves as well. Like for instance, the jet would create waves and fly by a buggy at high speed and knock it over without touching it, or a blast of wind from a jet could come from behind a buggy and send it soaring through the air. I was also thinking these winds could influence the lava waves. The jet could fly low and create waves on either side of it in the lava, much like a boat does in the lava. This could also be used for drifting, i believe it's called that. Like when racecar drivers get behind another car and it helps them go faster. Thank you for listening.

I like all the ideas! Its nice you can back them all up with reasonable explanation! The moons i especially like, seeing that they could provide ice covered worlds.

And babaG, that idea is AWESOME!! It would add great realism! You should send the idea to Aubrey or make a post!

Moons sound okay. But, the Martian moons are just asteroids that got caught into orbit, so they wouldn't be round.

As for the shuttle? That seems a BIT too low-tech for Mars. Besides, we'll have the Sky Monster soon!

more ruins are to come, they will be lower that those ones, oh btw if you think it is an easy job making them that small area of ruins took like 3 hours to make and paint

here ya go the mars ruins
just got to find some grass like the grass on unity island(not the 3d grass, but the rock, grass texture in order to Finnish of the ruins and the volcano(p.s if you haven't noticed there are 5 of them in one big hill, mind you you cant really see them in this picture)

btw the different colours are different metals, most used = the most common
the least used = the most uncommon found on mars, yes there will be a quarry somewhere on the map with the different metals in it, it will be like a pit like the one in foxholes, but with out the hills in the middle of it

i will start a post soonish about the map!

Seb, that's COOL!!

Make it full of snow! That would be awesome, like the alpine environment from trackmania!

(without all the other stuff, just a bunch of snow and ice)

I can model the "snowmobile", if anyone wants me to while I'm gone.
