Spammers, Lament
Submitted By admin on 10/03/13
Mars Explorer, admin, Official
This Document originally posted in the "Mars Explorer" Group

In the midst of several vastly more exciting announcements which I hope to soon unveil, I decided to take a break and add a simple moderation system to PlexPedia and enable it for the Mars Explorer group.

Our initial moderators are:
  • TheDude
  • Kruncher
  • MacDane
  • FlyClub
  • Picard
  • BabaG
  • GTR34
  • KillerDude
  • SebfromNZ
  • PointyBagels
  • SuperCheese
  • Spiffy
  • Olim

While logged into their accounts, the afore enumerated users will be able to alter the status of any post on MarsXPLR.com just as if it was their own. Whenever they exercise this authority, their action will be added to the site's "Moderation Log", which should serve to alleviate any concerns of the system being abused:

In the coming days, I will make an effort to publish some moderation guidelines and other useful materials. In the mean time, please just use common sense.

The current list of moderators is nothing more than a wholly incomplete sampling of some of the wonderful martians who have long served as upstanding, exemplary members of our community (most of the time at least :). If any of the current moderators feel that more moderators are needed, they can nominate someone by sending me an email. If you are not a moderator now but would like to become one, please discuss it with a current moderator instead of bugging me directly.

I have received quite a few intriguing proposals for PlexPedia moderation systems over the last couple of days, and together, they all prompted me to design this one. Many thanks for your encouragement, and I will try to get back to you all personally as soon as possible! Please be sure to comment and let me know what you think about this system.

All the best,

-Aubrey

P.S. I will add a feature to moderate individual comments at my next available opportunity.

Outstanding... I think that's all i can say.

This will be a great help to the future of the forum.

I think that while you're writing up some rules to moderators, you should write some up to everyone else too on the do's and dont's of posting on the forum. And possibly add those rules as a new main link across the site.

Outstanding... Thank you very much Aubrey, on behalf of the entire forum.

Wow! I'm stunned! I will sleep on this. Thank you Aubrey for your tireless efforts to constantly upgrade all aspects of our Mars experience both on and off the game.

Regarding "most of the time" well, shucks! eh heh heh?   :)

Yay!
:D
It's an honor t be a mderator, but I can't say I didn't see it coming. ;) Then again with the whole hacking thing I had mu doubts.

With, or without prediction, thank you SO MUCH, for both taking the time to program moderation, and making ME one! :D It seriously is a MAJOR honor! Great work! Oh, and do check out the is moderator bug. At first, I thought was "isadmin", so I went on to the next page. Then, ten seconds later I went "wait a minute....". I clicked the back button re read it as "ismoderator", and found this!

I'll see if I can program up some kind of report system :D

Oh yes FlyClub your so modest, but hey we love ya!

Yay to everyone who got to be a moderator! I am happy for all of you.... But yes what Gazzy said strikes importance.
Do not go crazy with power, and resolve everything.... Some things are there for good memories and should stay up somewhat.

I just don't get why we can't just ignore them... Oh well if you go on here everyday I guess it's a pain... But I guess you have to be completley loyal to mars in order to understand why this is such a big deal... Something I would have understood if I did come on everyday. Right now it's more than usual but whatever.

YAY AGAIN FOR THE MOSERATORS I LOVE YA!!!!

i dont have much against moderators, but i do have this one request. please please please dont go insane with power, changing any post that you think is 'nonessential'. I can understand if it is total spam, but if it is someone just posting something funny, just leave it. it makes the forum more enjoyable to find posts with random funnyness on em.

Thank you Aubrey!!!  This will help, A LOT!  However, I have two requests for the moderators.  1: Please only get rid of a post if it is inappropriate.  If you don't think that the post doesn't pertain to the game, politely ask the owner to get rid of it/explain why they think it's relevant to the game.  If they don't comply, then get rid of it.  I'm asking this because of the fact that it WOULD be kinda annoying to have your post gotten rid of with no explanation to you, because sometimes newbs won't know that it's wrong to post non-Mars stuff.  :/  2:  PLEASE don't go crazy with power!  :D  Remember, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.  Great men are almost always bad men"  ~John Acton.  You have a lot of power now, so please don't go crazy.  :)

g-man, kriby - How about, I hide as appropriately as I can without explaining each and every one. Then, if you feel something merits un-hiding, you link it to me and we talk about it?

If I were to explain each hide, I could only rid the site of about 6 per day out of over 2,000 current posts.

My current criteria are generally as follows:
1. Ancient ('08) with no comments for a long time
2. Personal "hey how yah doin'" or "I'm BAK!!!!!!" I have left last goodbye posts of significant players that most of us miss. *sob*
3. Ideas refused, implemented or against Mars Explorer philosophy such as mega-weapon ideas.
4. defunct clans/club updates such as Black Racoons, lol EB, Elite
5. cloners
6. non sensical, can't understand
7. noob complaints - pre boot function
8. player no longer active
9. true member ID detectable - personal pic, you tube channel with owner visible
10. if  bammed,  bammer would be flamed

Finally, Aubrey created a moderation log for all to view. I expect him to keep a sober eye on our activities and offer guidance in these matters.

I'll just list my thoughts on all of your criteria.  :)
1.  'k, I understand.
2.  Eh, in terms of goodbye posts, isn't that being a little bit biased?  If you're going to hide goodbye posts, then I would suggest hiding all of them, so there's no favoritism.
3.  Agreed.
4.  Agreed.
5.  Agreed.
6.  Agreed.
7.  Agreed.
8.  If you mean you'll hide all the posts of a player who doesn't play anymore, I suggest not doing that.  You never know if someone will want to go back and look at the posts.
9.  Agreed.
10.  Agreed.

kirby,
2. Of the goodbye posts I have found, they have all been from well known players. If I find one from someone called 7fgrtyske8 or something like that, I will probably hide it. Another mod may hide all goodbye posts though. As I said before, if you feel a post needs respawning, please let me know.

8. I can't word my intentions perfectly so please have some trust in me? If my intention was to hide ALL the posts of non active players, I would have used the word "all" in my original explanation.

I am focusing mostly on drama, nonsensical, blatantly frivolous and multi-account generated, anti-Mars community such as bubuhG, kruncha, ThyDude. They all fall into Aubrey's earlier complaint of unbalanced "signal to noise" posts.

I'll now state my criteria for leaving posts alone:
* moderator's posts - It's up the each mod to groom their output.
* (admin)
* usefull
* potentially useful
* truly and universally fun

I will not bend to nostalgia in my janitorial efforts and become a cat lady that pets the skeletons of her past pets like you may have seen in the news except in the case of the goodbye posts I mentioned.

In closing, Aubrey has urged all mods to use common sense AND he has warned us of "consequences if he has to get involved". That should be enough for us all to stand a little straighter.
I hope that quells your concerns?

I have already started on my job,

I'll first explain what threads I am looking for to hide so there will be no confusion.

I am mainly looking for old spam threads to get rid of,
I am also looking for threads that are about past events, and are out of date.

That is what I'm initially looking for.

Thank you Aubrey for giving me this great responsibility,
I will do my best.

Aubrey, I would suggest making a new page or a part on the FAQ where it lists the reasons a post could get hidden for.  This would make it easier to explain to the newbs why their post about pie or something just got hidden.

As Kruncher did above, I will state my own personal moderation policy:

  1. I will hide incredibly old threads (Past version bug reports, complaints, version ideas, etc.)
  2. I will hide threads that are meant for pm's, or a personal blog.
  3. I will hide threads that are blatant and clear spam.
  4. I will hide threads whose ideas have been implemented, and resolve threads whose questions have been answered (That is so future members still have access to the information)
  5. I will hide threads whose question has already been asked, and answered in the past.
  6. I will not touch threads of historical significance.
  7. If you have a question as to why I hid a certain thread, pm me, and we'll talk about it.
That is my policy, hope that works for everybody!
I will also hide anybody's thread, regardless of if you're a moderator, experienced player, or you think you're just plain cool.

And, this is MY policy:
I will,
  • Resolve, or hide, any drama posts past page seven
  • Hide any spam, or obscene posts.
  • Moderate any spam, or obscene comments
  • Hide feature requests that were completed
  • BAM good, and uncompleted game ideas
  • NOT hide any uncompleted posts
  • Hide any posts regarding currently outdated versions.
  • Hide, or resolve any time-relevant posts (posts that can no longer serve any purpose, or rely on things that no longer exist, in order to serve a purpose.)

I was wondering...

How many active posts are there on Marsxplr?
How many comments?

It seems that stuff from an ancient past is surfacing now, so I actually moderated a post myself.
I admit it. I hid the foul thing with a little smile in the corner of my eye.
No need for fancy JS here. There was just the initial post and the contents was as rude as ever.
I wont take bets if any of you can guess who posted and you don't have to post about it here either.

See you all later.

-ModDane

EDIT:
I just hid and resolved a gazillion of my own old posts.
I will leave one post open with a link to my youtube videos when I finish moderating my own stuff.
It feels nice to be a janitor...

Greetings everyone!
Sorry I was offline yesterday, I had some unexpected events transpire.

Thanks for cleaning up this thread's comments Flynn, it was a copycat offender who has now been taken care of.

I just fixed the moderation log's pagination, and the "isModerator" bug which rendered Plexpedia subdomains unaccessible yesterday. If anyone else experiences other issues, please let me know!

Quick Note: If a non spam question has been answered - it should be marked as "resolved", not "hidden". This ensures that others with the same question later will be able to benefit from the answer instead of having to reiterate it.

Not immediatley. Please attempt to work it out with them first, possibly asking a couple other mods to objectively evaluate the situation and offer their feedback (Matthew 18:15-17).

If I have to get involved, there will be consequences.
The idea of moderators is that I have more time to work on cool new stuff :)

I would like to give some advice to the majority of people on this forum. Although there is now moderators capable of cleaning up the forum, moderators are a secondary weapon. You are the primary weapons. Please help the community and go through all of your posts, picking out which ones should stay as active and which ones should be hidden or resolved. Thank you all for helping.

If anyone sees posts they think is SPAM, they should report it to the mods via PM.

Because the mods have lives. They aren't on 24/7. Besides, if I was on 24/7, it would get pretty boring.

I would like to express my great thanks for this change. I just now was bored and went to page 100 (remember when cheezburger suggested that?) only to find that with the huge number of spam posts removed there are only pages up to the late 80s. This is a truly amazing amount of hiding that the moderators have done. Thank you.

Actually, The Guess Who posts were not hidden by mods. When those game posts get full, we make a new one so it doesn't lag so badly. We had posts with over 1,000 comments (I don't feel like searching the hidden posts for an exact figure) and those can really lag down the computers. The Guess Who post you are referring was eventually hidden for the reason it was getting full, not for the insult competition ;)

Ha ha, nope. The now-infamous Insult Competition took place on not the second, but the THIRD generation of the Guess Who posts.

We are now on the fourth one, but it wasn't hidden because of that one thing, Beatles. As stated above, we needed more room.

I personally think that "Guess Who" and "Corrupt a Wish" have no place on this forum, but I do not hide them because they are too popular.

Big deal, two silly posts that are fun for tons of people.

Everyone is behaving soooo much better on the forum these days, yes, including me.  :)

Thanks to all the mods that defended the site during the recent spam attacks. That was a lot of work but kinda fun, right?

lol, the best part is that some don't even know there was a spam attack, that is what makes it the best IMO

Hi Aubrey, knowing that you're ultra busy, I think it would be great if you could blank or benignly rename the title and content of recent spam attack posts so folks could view the mod record without having to view the intensly spamoidal content.

ANP is not in my opinion that great of an idea.

Though it does make a pretty cool main name.

Resignation of Moderation Status
2 weeks - 32,767v
Posted 2010/09/17 - 1:50 GMT
I feel I should let it be known that I am no longer a Moderator of Marsxplr.com. I asked Aubrey back in late July to terminate my status as Moderator, and my request was granted. Please do not come to me with any moderation request or suggestions. Send that stuff to actual moderators.

Thank you all.

With Warm Regards,

TheDude

No Stryker, mods can't alter accounts but Aubrey has temporarily locked a couple of accounts upon my request. Mod "power" is limited to hiding or resolving a post but some clever folks have created code to deal with stubborn re-posters of mod-hidden material and to deal with annoying comments, you know Stryker, annoying? comments?  :)

TheDude? Never going online? Are you sure you were around "before the moderators"? He spent several days in the original post purge, and a good time afterwards as well. He was on all the time.
