Sooner or lator...
Submitted By cheezburger on 09/12/11
Mars Explorer, cheezburger, Community, its, gona, happen, sooner, or, lator, the, good, ham, and, other, good, things, too, Not, Much, else, lego, sandwitches, stuff, harb

Picture ourselves in a server.  We is all snug in our little server.  Oops! there's a leak!  a n00b has goten in!  dont worry!  Lets just seal up that leak with a BAN button.  There!  All better!

......Several Moments of time lator......

here we are!  back in our snug server!  OH no!  another leak in the server!  Another n00b!  well lets just ban again.  OH DEAR!  the leak!  its getting bigger!!  AHH!! The ban button can only handle soo much! NOES!!!  THE N00BS ARE FLOODING IN!!!!

Strange.   This seems like this is actually happening to us right now.  But i think we are only at the part where the leak has started.  Sooner or lator, we will be flooded by n00bs and everyone of us will be tossed and turned as the n00b tide comes in.  We will all be separated as the surge comes in and washes us all out and about.  We become separated, farther and farther split apart by the ocean of n00bs.  As we waddle through the n00bs, we try to find each other, but we are just plain lost in the Sea of n00bs.  We either give up and drown or we look for each other.  But either way, its bound to happen.  More and More n00bs will play and more and more n00bs will have accounts, further spamming up the site.  This sounds bad and all and it all has a definition.  Popularity.

If Mars Explorer becomes more and more popular, then more people will join.  Now many of these players might be respectable players and many will not be.  It will be up to us to sort and filter all of these new players into categories.  But in the mean time, as people join from all around, they will separate us from each other and they will cause turmoil. <---  wow i accually managed to spel that word right without spelcheck!!  :D!  anyway, The n00bs will be causing trouble and there is little we can do about it.

But as i said before, this is whats gona happen to us when Mars Explorer becomes more popular.  Many people will play and they might get in our way.  Popularity seems good and all, but if you get lots of it, then all the fun of being popular goes down the drain.

So now you say, well then lets not be popular.  we wont tell anyone about Mars Explorer.  But that isn't any better.  Without many people playing,  then slowly, Mars will become abandoned and it will all go down from there.

Having a flood of n00bs is actually better than having a drought of respectable players.

And if you are to survive the flood, you must train for it.  You must learn to get on the n00bs side in order to sail on their waters.  If not, you will be sunken down further into the depths of the ocean of n00bs.

Hopefully, this post has made you think twice about wanting Mars to be popular.  But although we cant prevent it, we can suffer and hopefully rise up to the flood.

Cheez, I say, say hello! To the noobs. If they say "hi", they have hope of being a good player. If they say nothing, feel free to ban them.

The ban can handle around 100 noobs.

I say, popularity is great, but we might want to put a measure on who can post.

well written cheez, If mars gets a bit more popular that'll be fine but like you said if it becomes too popular no one will ever see each again and it will not be a community any more.
but other than that I think people are overreacting to all these noobs, esp. with all the plans people come up with to get rid of them

Good point, Cheez. I think it's only inevitable. In fact, I made a fan fic about this type of situation a month or two ago. You can find it by searching my name, or you can find it on marsstories.plexpedia.com.

how will noobs separate us? if we want to see each other then all we have to do is PM each other to set up a reunion date or something. Also, Aubrey might be putting in a friend's list soon and we may be able to find each other through that.

Actually, cheez, GREAT ...uhh..i'm not sure what you call it when you put a situation in a perspective like that...

But, it was a great view.
FC, I like what you said too.

This is a good post to look back on and think 'What can I do to help?'

I have to ask, IS Mars getting more popular, there are about as many people leaving as there are coming in, if not more, I don't think a little advertising would hurt, but only a little.
However
Should mars get more popular, maybe Aubrey could make a few people moderators so he doesn't have to do it all himself.  A friend list might work for keeping a community together, but then the community would shrink as people left, and the ones who stayed went seperate ways into the many clubs that would form.  A popular Mars would probably start another club wars.
and maybe, make it so a moderator has to give someone posting privelages before they can use the forum, or have it automatically unlock if you stay long enough.

It would be cool to get sunk into the ocean. We could live as Atlantians.

What we need is a list, that we make, that says "these are the only people who can join" or a "dont allow unregistered players to join" checkbox. This would be a lot easier than making a list of 400 n00bs that you dont want to allow

I like the idea of putting in a blanket ban type control, and I think that should definetely be instated soon, but I think the main problem is how are the servers going to handle all of the new people wanting to play at the same time.  Right now, the most we've had playing at one time is probably around 80 or 90, maybe more.  But if Mars's popularity skyrockets, we're going to have to deal with lag and server blockups and crashes more often.  I say we focus more on getting more high-tech to be able to support assumed masses of players.

Potential of the friend list:
•Show what friends are online
•An option to only view games that friends are in
•A friend's chat box where friends can talk to each other while they are in different games or on the server list
•Friends-only servers

Has anyone played 2.2 lately, it is happening, right now, as we speak.
As long as we are in the beta version ahead of the crowds, we should be fine.

To all the doubters: There are 112 people online right now.  By the end of 2010, i think at this time of day there will be around 1012 people on

I saw it at 115 just 2 mins ago.

to help with the problem of "non-chatters" we need to tell them to press tab to talk. that will bring their numbers down.
