Hey all, I saw Pb&j's hovercraft and I got an idea; I could try modelling the submarine! :D


I asked permission, but could not wait for a reply and started already, here is the result so far:

I used Autodesk Maya 8.5 to model this. Thanks for your kind reactions.:)

Tell me what you think; should they be moved back, forward, up, down. Should they be bigger, tube-like or more extruded.

Now for something else, I have not been able to work much on the submarine as I have been busy with lots and lots of schoolwork and I don't want my marks to suffer. :/ I will have more time in the weekends though. :D

Yes, there is a cockpit, but I might change it in time because I don't know if it fits the rest of the submarine. As for the size... that's not for me to decide, as long as Aubrey hasn't commented on this thread in any way, I have no way to determine what he wants or wether he even wants this design in his game.

I considered to ask for a turret on the buggy, but it wouldn't fit nicely. This is also the case with the submarine, I will try some things, but I don't know wether it'll work.

Nope, a fake torpedo bay didn't fit well and would only distort the aerodynamics. Keep the ideas coming though, this wasn't a bad one.

Thanks for designing this.

Could you experiment with a slightly more pointy nose? Lava is an incredibly viscous liquid, and astetically, it looks looks like the current somewhat blimp like nose might have a hard time penetrating it. If there are any physics experts here, I would be really interested in the relative hydrodynamic properties of water and lava - when dealing with something as sticky as lava, does the teardrop shape need any optimizations to remain optimal?

Also, although your thrusters look great - as far as I know, the current nuclear submarines use steam turbines powering propellers. Even magnetohydrodynamic drives require an intake! If you could add an intake for each thruster near the front of the sub, not only would it look cool, but it would be more technically accurate of how submarines are propelled. You could either mirror all the thrusters around the center of your sub, or add one large intake on each side of the sub near the front - which might require raising the front fins a bit, but might look cooler. The thruster outlets could also be enlarged a bit - we are going to need some massive thrust to propel this thing through lava! It would be really neat if you could connect the intake and outlets to each other, so that you could see through them when piloting the sub from outside. Perhaps I could even add some rotating propellers! I can't quite see what is on the back of the sub from your pictures. Is that the main source of thrust?

What kind of instruments do you think the sub will need? Sonar?
Also, do you think that it should be possible to visually "see" when submerged in lava? Technically, I don't - but it would make piloting a sub so much more interesting! Perhaps I could just make the lava a little transparent when seen from above, and say that it it special non opaque martian lava. We will need a really good scientific explanation for that :)

Hey Aubrey, thanks for commenting! :)

Lava is basically molten rock, so you should not even be able to withstand the heat, let alone tow or see through it, so don't worry about that. :P I will point the nose a bit more if you like, but I don't know anything about hydrodynamics...

As for the boosters, they were just meant to be stabilisers, I had the back hole in mind to act as main propulsion source (please contradict me if you don't feel ok about that), I did not add jets or propellors there yet because I and pb&j thought you should decide that. I will also add some intakes, it will be hard to let them connect to the boosters, but I'll try. ;) I don't know if the enlarging is a good idea, as the hole in the back cares for the main propulsion and I meant the boosters just as stabilisers and... well, boosters. :P

Now for the sight... sonar would be a really cool idea! I can totally picture the subterranean world appearing in wireframe-like form within a certain radius, this means you can look through mountains and see other players appear in wireframe as well. When submerged, I think the submarine should only see in sonar (wireframe) mode. When at the surface, it could switch to normal sight as it also has a (clear?) cockpit, this means it will be able to spot hovercrafts when submerged, so in sonar (wireframe) mode, sounds totally cool! :D

Yes, I think the submarine should be able to be spotted. Not with a special kind of lava, but with a shadow. Do you know any of those movies in which something (dangerous) comes from below the surface? It always appears as a shadow first. Maybe you could make the shadow smaller as the submarine gets deeper? Or maybe the submarine should emit light so you can see light coming from beneath the surface. I personally like the shadow most.

This time, I made sure you can look all the way through the submarine by straightening the channels inside, I also edited the inlets, so that they curve more with the submarine instead of punching a hole into it;

Now I only need to know what to put into the back hole of the submarine, I personally would like to have some jets (like the one on the hovercrafts), but if you prefer propellors, I'll put them in there.

I had an effect in mind just like with the hovercraft (maybe with a bit longer trail). Tell me if I should keep this or put propellors (which I don't think really suit the game) in.

All I need to know now (if you're fine with the current design) is wether I should texture it. (I don't recommend it, as I've never done that before. :P)

Great work!

It looks pretty good - I can't wait to see the actual 3D model.

I agree with you that propellers are a bit low tech for Mars Explorer, but I realy don't think that flame thrusters would look right under the lava :) I will experiment with different kinds of "lava jet" effects.

You don't need to texture it, but could you do one other thing for me? Please create seperate 3D objects for the thruster insides (they should be darker), possibly fins, and the cockpit. (And add a flat or concave piece to the body inside the cockpit so there isn't a hole in the body). In Unity, I can only do one material per 3D object, so It saves me the work of seperating the objects myself.

Once you are ready, you can post your file to Archive.org, or any other system you are familiar with. Just like with Skippy's Hovercraft, you will need to license your model to allow me to use it in a commercial project royalty free.

For transporting vehicles, you need to be with the sea monster. I don't think it would fit the submarine to transport buggies on its back. I think it can push them though. Let's see what Aubrey thinks.

Separating the objects will be a piece of cake, should I separate any object that needs to be textured apart from the body?

I will take a look at the licensing site and put it on there if I can figure it out.

Well my suggestion is that there be underwater docking ports atached to the hull of the ship. Inside each under water

docking port is a buggy/submarine change point so that the submarines can change into a buggy a, and drive up

to the main deck of the ship. This change point only allows for buggies to turn into submarines and the other way around.

Its a great model, i just have another question about the program. Where did you get it? Is it a download or is it a disk? If its a download please post the web you got it from if its a disk please post the shop or internet site you ordered it from, also go on google and look at the euro fighter typhoon near the nose there a two small wings that help manoeuvre the aircraft, i think te sub would look cool with two on either side. Keep up the good work

i suspect it is coming to mars explorer in 2.0, which won't be out for a while. Aubrey should be done with the iPhone version of m.e. this month, at which point he will start work on 1.10. It may be a while, but when it comes out the motorcycle should come out too!!!!!!!!! yaaaaaaaaaay!!!!! 8-p

Hello again, thank you for your attention. I would like to make use of this opportunity to introduce you to something new. The submarine displayed above seems rather.. primitve upon closer inspection, the mesh is inefficiënt and messy at some places. I have gotten better since last time, I would like to introduce this to you:

These pictures were taken directly from the render window, this submarine is currently the latest version, I will post a definite version if this one needs to be changed.
This model, like all of my models, was made with Autodesk Maya. Not easy, not free, but very good.
I do not know Aubrey's intentions of new materialization clouds, this is not up to me either.

I agree.  By the way, the sub looks beautiful, though on the sides it was a BIT over folded - it looks somewhat like the mesh is having difficulties with the angle, and Unity probably will have even more - especially when it smoothes out the mesh.... Other than that - great work! The cockpit to hull transition.. a LITTLE too sharp for me, perhaps radiate the connecting vertices out a bit? Also I have noticed the fold thing around the front too.

There are some problems with the looks of the mesh, some faces on the side were removed and could not be placed back in the same way. To keep the model absolutely symmetrical, all objects were divided into two, then there is some modeling, then they are placed back together, this gives a bit of a seam. However, for example with the buggy, the mesh is not visible at all, only when carefully reviewing all angles you can make out some corners, these small mistakes will not in the least be visible if given a similar paintjob.

Everything looks amazing.  Although the basic body looks a little off.  When I think of a sub, I imaging a slick hot dog shape.  The model you've provided looks more like a very long hamburger.  It might just be me but i'd either lengthen the body or shorten the height.

There was an old most on mars explorer where Aubrey showed two buggy prototypes, both un-textured, and I could still not see the corners. As you said it takes a VERY close look to see them, but on here they were the first things that popped out to me. You might want to attempt a fix.
 
 I have a trick in blender that might work for you, I am not sure if you know them, or if your program will let them, but for the spirit of help:
 
I select two vertices on either side of the mesh. If I want to move them out equally, I switch into scale mode, and move them along an axis that points out, both go out in opposite directions. If I want to move them up or down equally, I just use regular move mode, if I want to make one go up, and the other go down, I rotate them, then expand them a bit.
 
 
Those are my tricks for symmetry, I used them like mad for the motorcycle. I am not sure if maya has this, but blender also has a symmetrical modeling system, you model one side, and it models the other exactly the same. I personally do not use it, but you might like it.

I know this method very well, I use it when I need to model small symmetric objects. However, the submarine is not low detailed enough to use this method, cutting the mesh in half just gives so much more freedom and ease.
I really think that with a paintjob it will not be visible, the vertices are aligned exactly right, the mesh just does not know how to curve the faces. As this is a polygon model, you should not rely on curved faces.
If this turns out to be a problem after all, I will do my best to fix it.

Whether they are curved or not it is the position of the vertices. Judging by the grid visualization the motorcycle actually has more - or the same - detail, Of course I use mass selection techniques - I view it from the side, and select the vertices on one side, and this current side at the same time. Like I said, the vertices need to be merged around the edges with that glitch (If they are not all ready) And then moved away from the bumps they are located at;  Thus creating less of a 180°+ angle.

I think you missed the point there.. I am now talking about the faces on the side of the model. The curve of the faces is not something determined by vertices, it is merely Maya that sees it as a sphere or whatever object you created. These faces were removed accidentally, I pu them back the exact same way they were. I put back, that is, the vertices, Maya now sees these faces not as part of the "sphere", therefore it does not display the curve in them, personally I thought these visual effects would not be transferred to Unity. Take a look at the hovercraft, it consist completely out of non-curved faces without anybody noticing it.
The same basically goes for the seam running around the model, it is just Maya that sees it as two merged halfs instead of one model, therefore it looks as if the vertices are not placed correctly. Again, I seriously doubt that these effects will be transferred to Unity, in case they are I will do my best to remove them.

Altho the density of lava, at roughly 2000 degrees F, is only about 2.5 grams/cm^3 as apposed to water being 1 g/cm^3 the dynamic viscouse effects are what really play a part in the forces required to move an object through it.   A CFD annalysis could give you the flow velocity over each surface of the sub at different speeds and from there you could calculate the drag forces, but that is unnessessary.   The viscosity of lava is about 100,000 times that of water and since the coefficient of viscosity is directly proportional to the force required then your gonna need about 99,999 more nuclear reactors than your average Naval Boomer.  Seeing as this is a game however allowes us to deny reality and creat our own.  ;-)

I think the blimp/sub idea would be great!
But it would also be cool if the blimp had a turret mounted underneath. This would make fireing a little easier

If it can only function in water that might be a little problematic. Maybe make it so it can fly like the jet but when u hit the water u just keep going like nothing happened and can start exploring the water after that

This is quite nice.  I would love to see it in Mars Explorer or syn3h.  It would be fun.  I just wonder if only being underwater would be a disadvantage.  Maybe there should be a all water world, where only submarines could spawn.

Why don't you get with the modern age? As in your modern age, it'd be nice if you used the manners of that age, we'd all be the better for it.

I know this is an old post, but the model is splendid, and those thrusters are incorporated in an aesthetically seamless manner. Looking forward to driving this one soon!

That is really an awesome idea, but how would it go on land?  I mean how could it get from the recall point to the water? Will it be able to go on land and water, but just slow on land?  But in all its awesome! i would love a submarine in this game
