As Lucas browsed through the widget store on his new MacBook, he started thinking that there was no such thing as a fun Mac Widget. Finally, he decided to type in "Flight Simulator" as a seach querey and came up with a list of results. He found a game called "Mars Explorer," and gave it another click. "Join the community at www.MarsXPLR.com." The game only had a few hundred downloads, but it still looked like fun, so he copied and pasted the link into Safari's address bar and hit enter. What's so great about another user coming to Mars, you ask? Well, that user happened to be Lucas Cruikshank, also known as Fred.

The website looked promising. Lucas browsed through the forums and FAQs and realized that the game was created by just one person, and he was only 19 years old! He decided to give the game a try. He set up the Unity player, started the game, set his username as "Fred," and went to the server list. It was late at night, so not many players were on, except for one server, hosted by Robloxian (GalaxyAwesome). Lucas joined the server.

He was greeted by a friendly "Hello!" from his server host. The controls were fairly easy. He soon learned how to control the colors, and with help from Galaxy, he was soon flying around in a gold jet like a pro. "So," said Galaxy, "did you get your name from the youtube fred?" Lucas was laughing silently. He knew that this guy would never believe him, but he still said, "Yes." "Really?" said Galaxy. "Prove it. If you're really Fred, make a video on your account all about how great Mars Explorer is."

Lucas said he would, and quickly disconnected. He figured this little game could use some publicity, so he pulled out his video camera and started talking. "Hey, it's Fred! I was on the internet thing and I found this fun thing called Mars Explorer and I want you all to try it because one guy made it and it's awesome!" He edited it to be fast and annoying using his top-secret software, and posted it on Youtube.

That's when Mars started to crumble.

1,000 users had joined within 10 minutes. 100,000 within an hour. 1 million had joined within 12 hours. The original users of mars were drowned out with spam. The PlexPedia network was streched far beyond the intended capacity. Pretty soon, you could refresh the Mars Explorer home page to find that there were 100 new posts. GalaxyAwesome sat at his computer and watched the chaos unfold. He had no idea that that user had been the real Fred, and he couldn't help but think that this was all his fault.

Aubrey, the creator, was suffering too. Over the course of a few hours, he had achieved more fame than he could ever imagine, but now the new posts and users had nearly maxed out his database, and Mars, Plexpedia, and even the entire ATI network had been compromised. Because of this one video, he had become a celebrity, but now his internet life had been destroyed.

I guess the moral of this story is that fame always comes with a price.
