Welcome to Version 3 of the General Discussion Thread. Same rules apply.

Hello! Are you tired of not being able to talk about anything but Mars? Sure you are! For anyone, it can get a little bland sometimes. So post anything under the General Discussion Thread's rules!

Rules:

1. Your post may be non-Mars related. (Remember, if you have a question on something regarding Mars, please ask here: http://marsxplr.com/view-9933)

2. Try not to make this a flaming board. But if there are rants/fights going on, I expect them to be on this thread! Don't spam the other posts.

3. Try to have some purpose in your posts! Just saying, "I had a bad day," is not starting a discussion. Say, "My teacher gave me a detention for talking, but it was the person next to me! What do I do?" for example.

4. Spam will be removed. Avoid excessive caps, pictures, and gibberish because it will most likely be spam.

5. Flaming will be kept under havey scrutiny. Keep it appropriate and avoid spam. Try not to flame in the first place.

6. Keep your post coherent (language, what you are addressing, etc.)

7. Advertising is prohibited.
I used the previous rules =)
Have fun!

Yes! It made my day. She walked up to me with a bunch of Reese's peanut butter cups, my favourite candies, and said "Hey Jarey Berry (her nickname for me), it would be berry cool if you went to Sadie's with me." Made my day hehe.

I had two teachers come up to me today and tell me that I need to take the AP class next year (AP Lang/AP Lit and AP Euro), and I have two other AP classes that I'm planning on taking already (AP Calc and AP Comp Sci), and I might get asked to take a fifth one too (AP Chem). Oh and also I should apparently take a sixth one because of reasons (AP French).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messiah_(Handel)

It's a famous oratorio (kind of like an opera, but without all the expensive acting, costumes, etc. and usually religious)
The hallelujah chorus, which you'll probably have heard of comes from the Messiah.

Just got my permit. Went out for the first hour of instruction, sped 15 miles over the speed limit, forgot the right of way for a T intersection, and swerved into the other lane while checking a blind spot. And I still got a thumbs up from some hot chick driving by. 10 points extra for moving targets, guys. WATCH OUT WORLD SVEN IS ON THE ROAD.

I HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY, and it was an all stop and I finished my stop and was going forward when someone sped and didn't stop at the stop sign, and he honked at me and flipped me off. Nice drivers huh. And I have an old Oldsmobile Alero from like 1999. Hehe it was like 3000 dollars from a family we know. We can't afford a better car and we're all sharing it as a family. It's so fun I love dat car

The veyron would be nice too, but if I were going for speed I'd want a koenigsegg agera r. They're faster than a veyron, and (in my opinion) better looking. Also, everyone who's super rich buys a veyron. Why not go for something more rare that's even faster than "the king"?

Ok, this is kinda an awesome coincidence, considering we are talking about nice cars, i dont live in like a super nice town (now of course im not one of those noobs who like shouts out left and right about where they live, so thats all the info you are getting) BUT, just this past week, i saw a Lotus Elise and Ferrari F430. and my friend saw the Ferrari F 430 and that same day he saw a Ferrari California, so for where I live, just in like a 2 days span, thats crazy good.

My neighbour owned an Aston V8 Vantage but sold it for a Range Rover Sport :c
My dad's best friend owns a Lotus Turbo Esprit, and I've been taken for a ride in it. 60mph around a roundabout... Fun :D
qwertywhatsit means the Mazda Furai. Imho it's ugly, also catches fire...
Personally, if I was super-rich my garage would include the Zenvo ST1 and a Gumpert Apollo S. And a Corvette ZR1, of the C6 era. Because LS9.
Maybe a SLS AMG Black series. (The spoiler fixes that car's appearance)

That said, I've never seen a car that just fits together better than the current or last-gen Camaro, especially the better models like the 2SS or ZL1. Reasonable performance, great looks, great sound, relatively low price tag.

Honestly, the fastest thing I'll ever own will probably cost less than a tyre for any of the cars I listed. Lol.

... And yes. Someone who works on Terrium puts the Gumpert at the top of a list for best looks.
Be afraid.

Hahaha in my town there are some pretty awesome cars... some of which include a bentley continental GT speed, Audi R8 V10 Plus, 1976 Lamborghini Countach, and a Porche 911 gt3. My dad has a 1955 Chevy Belair convertable that is super fun to go around in during the summer.

On the discussion of a dream garage I would love to have a aston martin v12 zagato, mercades benz 6x6 amg, ferrari f12 berlinetta, lamborghini huracan... I better stop there because I could go on for awhile. I sometimes think my obsession for cars is slightly unhealthy. A couple times while driving I've caught sight of a nice car and been completely distracted. I better get that worked out before my driver's test in July!!

I don't know about you guys, but I will be getting out of school in about 3 and a half weeks. Every day feels exponentially longer than the last. I've never really hated school because of friends and stuff, but I am just so ready to be done.

Firespeed,
You clearly have serious misconceptions as to what making games or movies involves.
It is not only "work", it is HARD WORK. I think a common misconception is that making a game is all just playing around all day. In fairness, there is a job that involves simply playing new games all the time. It's called "testing," and if you've ever played an alpha or beta version of a game, you've done it. You can get payed for doing it, but it's not exactly a safe job - and neither does it pay well.

Programming for a game is nothing like how it looks in the media. Typing fast, writing thousands of lines an hour? That's not how it works. In real life you can spend hours without typing a line, trying to work out why another three lines doesn't work. And it can be a really boring problem (networking...). On a game you didn't want to make (FARMVILLE). On something you didn't want included. (Turnip color customisation).

I spend 3-5h on Terrium, starting at 8pm, per day. Usually it would be at least four days a week, but we're getting to the point that I can't do much more so it's tailing off a bit now (plus I'm on vacation right now). It's taken more than a year since we picked Mars up; in hindsight it would have been faster to start from scratch, but you live and learn I guess. And that's just bringing a game up to date.

So, making a game is DEFINITELY "a job." Like most things, it can also be done as a hobby. For me it's a bit of a mix between the two, at least for now, with Terrium.

I consider it my "dream job" since it strikes a balance between creativity and logic. Also, the feeling of seeing a fictional world you helped to create come alive on a screen is truly wonderful.
I'm addictes to that feeling so I put up with doing the programming :P

Please excuse the rant-y comment. I'm just a teensy but offended that you suggested that making games isn't a job. It IS. I speak from experience.

Ace, I know that game developing and movie making is hard work! I guess I need to make that more clear.
And why do you act like I have no experience? I have alot! I got up everyday around 6 or 5AM And working till around 4 PM on a stop motion video. It was alot of work, it took a month total, too do 3:00 minutes of it! Not to mention the 2 days editing it. but in the end it payed off, I won an honorable mention and I was mentioned on the blog of halo.megabloks.com I also still have a lego plak they hand made me, with my nam eon it.

So stop saying I know nothing about game developing or movie making.
If I could I would post a link or somehting but It's not on youtube or anything.

"I don't think I want a job. I would rather make video games and movies..."

This states that you think that making games and movies isn't a job. Which it clearly is, and you should know if you have such experience.

I based my assumtion that you knew little about game development from the private messages you have sent me, asking how to do basic things. Forgive me if my assumption was incorrect.

Tell me, Sven. Do you have to take Chemistry as a Sophomore where you're from?

Here's some advice...

DON'T F*** IT UP!! I just failed for the whole year because I failed this marking period by ONE point!! Just do the work, and DON'T procrastinate. I don't think you could do as bad as I did, but I figured it would be best that I say that.

That goes for anyone who hasn't had Chemistry yet! It is a nightmare of boorishness, and takes forever to catch up on!

Yeah, I'm gonna take Biology this year then Chem next year probably. Or vice versa I forgot what I asked to take lol. Anyway don't worry I learnt in Math that you actually have to do your work since I got a D because I failed 11 math tests in a row and did none of my homework in the second semester, but cheated on finals and got a B in it so it raised my grade.

Cause that's just how we do. lol

I wish it was higher, but at least I didn't fail! And I'm finally a Junior! Summer vacation has finally begun. ;)

Once my mum and dad go on vacation to Hawai'i and leave us home alone for 4 or 5 days, I'm going to try and stay up for as long as possible to see the outcome on my brain, even though I know what it will be, but I want to experience it for some strange reason that I do not know.

You can do that, but try not make it a habit. Make sure that as soon as you are done experimenting how long you can stay awake, that you quickly go back to your normal sleep schedule. I have been doing that sense I was little, and I hate it now.

I actually have an extremely bad sleeping problem, and it has caused me to do very poorly this year in school. I'm usually a student with A's and B's, and I was getting whatever was possible this year. This is what I think I have.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_sleep_phase_disorder

My brother has ADHD, but I don't (which refers to the link.) I'm definitely not a hyper person! I never was. So, please don't experiment with it for too long. I keep trying to talk my mom into taking me to a doctor, but she thinks it's just because I'm a teen, and sleeping for long periods of time is normal. I hate it!

Well, I'm mostly assuming firespeed is talking about me looking up a problem I have, and using wikipedia to define it.

Or the fact that I stay up late all the time, but I really can't help it.

Anyway, the reason why I say "sadly" about the wikipedia link is because I can't just go to the doctor and say "Hey, doc, I can't sleep. Can you tell me what the problem is?" Why? Because my mom works all day for ten hours, so I don't have time to go to the doctors to figure out what I can do about my issue. Also, going to the doctor costs a lot of money, and in a way I feel like it would be a waste to go.

My dad was the one who had me stay up late, which happened when I was very young. My dad is an LPN, and he his schedule changed throughout the years. He always stayed up late, and I would too just to see him before he went to work, or because he was at work all day.

Because of that, I can't help but go to sleep later. I was able to fix it many times, but because I'm older, it is really hard to do. I haven't been able to fix it for quite a few years now.

That's why I say "sadly."

One of the reasons I love being Canadian is free healthcare. I forget what my history textbook says but I think it's been like that since the '60s or '70s, under either Diefenbaker's or Pearson's government. Probably boring you all with Canadian history. My plans for the summer are to party after exams are done, go camping for 2 weeks, come back home for a week, then go to live in France for a month. Then party some more. Then resume school as my first year as a senior, then feel dread from the incoming Canadian winter. Which is never pleasant

Yeah, I'm definitely not rich. The whole reason I went to the college was to get the scholarship because it would pay for half of my college tuition. If I didn't go, I wouldn't be able to go to college.

I hate living in an apartment, my mom works at a grocery store, and she is going to graduate and be an Administrative Office Professional in September. How she was able to afford college is by winning a scholarship. She still has to pay the rest after she graduates, which means I will have to do the same when I graduate college. I'm still trying to figure out where I want to work right now, and I'm going into my Junior year of high school... I feel guilty when my mom buys me stuff, even though I did nothing wrong. If I didn't go to Lycoming, I would have never received a scholarship, because my high school gives them to the rich, preppy, popular people I go to school with, when all they do is cheat on their tests and homework... I could work really hard, and they would give it someone who did nothing. I at least work for what I want.

As a matter of fact I do have a story about a computer!

Once upon a time in computaland there was a computer named bob, bob was a noob at playing games, cause all he did was camp and hid in corners.

Anyways, heres the story I was going too tell,

Once upon a time in computaland, there was a computer names bob (and no it's not the same bob the other bob was cause I wasn't thinking) bob HATED playing cool games, so all he did was play stupid games, so when his friend whatisface came over he had halo, but bob didin't like halo because it was a cool game. So they had too play this game named Mars Explorer, it was fun. But it wasn't the best game, you see, mars explorer was a cool game too, so bob did not like it! But his friend whatshisface loved it! So bob just went and became a noob, and whatshisface played mars explorer and said lol and lolololol and LAWLLAWLLAWL which really got annoying so he got banned.
End of story.

So anyways the real story is that I don't have a clue about how too build a computer.

For starters, make sure the computer case you pick can fit the parts you're ordering, that website does it for you, but if you don't use it, make check the size of the case and the motherboard.

Now with the cpu, you said you already picked, but what did you go with? Intel or or AMD? Intel, while it offers hyper-threading, is more expensive. AMD, offers more CPU cores (up to 8 currently) and up to a 5.0GHz processor. So, do you want super fast and expensive or pretty fast and relatively affordable?

For RAM, I'd check the clock speed for them. I'm going with 1600mhz RAM, but its really your choice. You'll definitely want DDR3. DDR2 is old and slow, DDR4 is is brand new, expensive and won't be mainstream for years. I'm went with 12GBs of RAM (Three 4GB sticks), but anything at or above 6GBs should do for most games and programs.

Moving on to the Hard Drive (HDD), most of the people I meet who know more about computers than me swear by Western Digital. If your going to be playing a lot of high end games that take up lots of GBs on your HDD, than you'll want something at or above 1TB. I have a 750GB HDD on my laptop and 1/3rd is already taken up by probably less than 25 PC games. And with the way drives are formated, what is labeled as 750GBs (Like mine...) is actually 698GBs. Make sure it has a high RPM, but not insanely high, you want speed and something affordable.

Another option is a Solid-State Drive (SSD), which is basically a faster version of a Hard Drive. While they offer excellent speed, they are expensive. Some people suggest using the SSD for the Operating System, and the bigger drive for storage, but that's up to you.

A third option is a Hybrid-Drive, which is a combination of the two. I don't know much about them so I guess we'd both have to do some research on that end.

Next, the most important thing with a gaming PC is the graphics card (GPU). I'm going with a 4GB GPU (Yeah, I know), mainly because most high-end games I can think of that I would play want a 3GB GPU (And for some reason the 4GB version was cheaper than the 3GB). I would check the recommended specifications of the games you plan on playing, then making your choice from there. I'm going with a AMD based card, but Nvidia is an option too. I'm not seeing anything that merits one over preforming better than the other, seems like its solely based on preference and what you can afford. Be sure to check the clock speed too.

For the Power Supply (PSU), you'll want something above 500w(atts) at least. PC Part Picker will tell you the estimated wattage for the parts you selected. I'm going with a 600w PSU, some go higher, but they probably have higher end rigs then what I'm going with.

Obviously you'll need a DVD drive. You can also go with a Blu-Ray drive if you wish. If your going to be creating DVD's and CD's, you'll want something capable of writing to disks. I don't need to write Blu-Rays, (I don't think many people do actually), so you probably won't need to spend the extra money for something capable of doing so.

Once you have all that in a case, you'll be generating a lot of heat, so you need something to keep it cool. You can go with either standard air cooling (Fans), or liquid cooling. I'm going with fans mainly because I don't want to worry about changing out fluid. Look for a fan that doesn't make much noise, PC Part Part Picker will show the noise level in decibels, I assume the lower the better. As for liquid cooling, the process is much more detailed than sticking a few fans in a case and connecting them to power.

Now, we move on to the Operating System (OS). Most PC games run on Windows, while more recently some of the more popular games have been ported to be Macintosh compatible. With the upcoming Steam OS which is Linux based, I imagine more and more games will be compatible with that was well. I'm going with Windows. Why? I don't feel like learning Linux, and I don't like Macs at all. The only viable reason someone ever gave for using a Mac is if you're a video and audio editing person, or if you don't like the boot times. The most common reason I've heard is that "Macs don't get viruses". That is a lie, they can get viruses, so can Linux and Android. Its like saying drive a Toyota and you won't ever have flat tires. Just grab a good anti-virus, use a secure web browser, (Basically anything but Internet Explorer), and stay away from sketchy looking websites.

This is completely optional, but a lot of people swear that sound cards make a huge difference in the quality of audio

Now for the last two things you'll need are the Mouse/ Keyboard, Speakers and a Monitor, I assume you have those since you already had a computer. If you don't, just make sure they aren't cheap quality.

Yeah I'd covered some more ground and did some more research.
Anyway, I've opted for an Intel i7-4770k, and I've put aside the motherboard question for now seeing as Im open to suggestion. I'm also debating between a GeForce GTX 780ti or an MSI Radeon R9 290X LIGHTNING for my GPU. I already have a nice gaming mouse, but I'll need to look into keyboards. I might also borrow some extra fans from my friend who just finished his PC build. They light up which is cool.

Okay... You out down what you prefer. It's quite simple.

Ginger ale or Sprite? (Seven Up, whatever)

Science or Programming?

Video Games or Reading?

Ham or Bacon?

iphone or Android?

Xbox or Playstation (or computer?)

Hmmm....
Definitely Mountain Dew Voltage which is pretty much the only good soda in Canada,
Science vs Programming... I'm actually a bit torn here but I'd say science.
Video games. Video games are life...
We'll considering I only have access to Canadian bacon, which is pretty much ham, I gotta say ham.
iPhone. Android just isn't for me.
I actually have all the mentioned gaming consoles but I think my PC trumps all.
You?

Well, I would say

Sprite, however I don't like it as much. I would prefer Coke.

I wouldn't choose science or programming, however, since I have to, it would be programming. I'm more of a business and history person.

And yes. Video games are life.

Ham. Definitely ham.

I have an Android phone, but I would rather have an iphone.

I have an Xbox and a computer... But I think I would like PlayStation more because their online network thing is free. You have to pay for Xbox live.

Ginger ale or Sprite? Ginger beer :P

Science or Programming? The two are one and the same for me. My programming uses a tonne of physics. That question, to me, is like asking "On your car, do you want an engine or wheels?"

Video Games or Reading? Games.

Ham or Bacon? Vegetarian for now ;P and if you'd ever seen UK bacon that question would be pointless... over here we don't really cook it, just sort of warm it up and serve it wet and floppy.

iPhone or Android?.... Can of worms.
Well, I've had a Google Nexus 4 for over a year that bests the iPhone 6 in every way that I care about.
Vanilla Android 4.4 is the OS for me, it just works perfectly, with more options.
Android also hasn't been on a downward turn for a few years, which Apple has been in every department. Coming from a confessed iMac-lover.

So NEXUS-LINE Android. Having seen the abomination Samsung call Android I can understand the hate it gets.

Xbox or Playstation (or computer?) PC Master Race! Been slowly building up the best budget gaming PC build I can find, intending to build it when the prices hopefully drop a little with the release of new gear.

I don't much about what the UK eats or drinks, so I was just saying some American products, and things like that.

Here is another question...

Vegemite or Marmite? :P I know Vegemite is supposed to be Australian, but I know Marmite is supposed to be British. Galaxy chocolate or Hershey's chocolate (if you don't like Hershey, please go easy, as I am from Pennsylvania. I love me some Hershey.)
