Hey guys, lets start off with I haven't posted in the forums for a LONG time. It took me a minute to find the submit button. Now lets see how long this post lasts...

But today, I'd like to address the fact that EVERYONE seems to be mad at someone at this point in time. Now, what if, there was a command that let you ignore a certain user?
I wouldn't know how this would work or if it's possible because I am clearly not a genius but i thought it was an idea worth mentioning for the future of Mars. I assume it would be like banning, but from chat and only for one person..?

I got the idea from a different game, whereas, you type "/ignore" then insert a username and then you can't see anything that person says. Just a thought, I figured it's worth a try to stop people from bickering.

**UPDATE**
Might also come in handy, the same purpose but with "/allow" so after you ignore someone, you can allow them into your chat again.

Hi Kruncher :D

Criticism welcomed.

This would be theoretically simple to implement in Mars 3. We're not working on extra features yet... but his could be done. And when it comes to it, I would write it in. It would be very useful. :D

Wow :D good to know my idea wasn't complete crap! xD I look forward to a mars where we can ignore people more than just reading what they say and just pretending it didn't happen.

This is something I will consider developing once we have a working friends list . . . an ignore list would come right after. For now, ignoring or banning will have to do.

This reminds me, I will make a thread with a list of what's been done and on the "to do list" for the Mars 3.0 source.

I think what she was suggesting was an ingame, one-off ignore. So if someone's dating their boyfriend while you're trying to dogfight, you don't have to see. Which would be fairly simple - just a quick check before showing messages.

I wonder.

Or say very inappropriate things about what they're doing to the thought of you. Or send certain types of pictures to people over 18.

Or under 18, for that matter.

Has someone else mentioned the fantastic honesty? And the DX spam? And, for that matter, the bacon sandwiches, and the habit of taking the quarry through walls? Deliberately using the 'glitch'?

TBH I can't wait for May. That's when our cat kicks the Martian bucket. Hope the bucket and the cat aren't seen again.

...that's what wild cats are for. Removing the domestic pests. ;)

(Side note - I'm fairly sure cat was why Lava posted his security post. Given that it happened a few days after she announced she accidentally sent 'the email' to him. nuff said.)

Anyone remember when Mars was family friendly?

Lol, yup. It passed a test (which is so old it can't find the approval picture online anymore lol.)

It's also supposed to have a swear filter, which I'll probably improve during development. It's so easy to avoid right now... like the classic - swapping capital I's for lowercase l's.

Yeah...it also has some weird ones.

It blocks "Packi" which, though I understand, sometimes you want to say "packing".
It blocks "snowb" and "snowba", which I can't even find on UrbanDictionary. Sometimes you want to say "snowball".
It blocks "scoba" or "sco ba", I can't find those on UrbanDictionary either. Sometimes you want to say "discoball" or "disco ball".
It blocks "gay". Some people are gay, Aubrey, get over it. Just because people think being a homosexual is an insult, doesn't mean it is.

Please get rid of these. They're annoying and get in the way.

Willco. I'll edit them out right now.

Edit: Aubrey has a great sense of humor. I went through the entire swear filter, and at the end, it says 'quitreadingthisyouneedalife'. xD

However, snowb(a) and scoba weren't there. I guess he must have removed them before the open-source release. Both are still picked up though... IDK what's going on.

nuuu keep the I and l's!!
and @ ender - people DO use being gay and lez and bi as an insult for example *ugh u guyz r so gay* you know, all misspelt because people are morons. Also, it refrains people from talking about their sexual preferences and I for one don't care about it but thats my opinion. I think keeping it banned would be better off so trolls couldn't be like *er meh gawd u guyzes r totes gay* and then cause a big argument on sexual preferences.

I know, but they're not. If they're edited out, somebody saying "ohemgee u r so gay" shows children that there IS something wrong with not being straight. There's nothing wrong with being gay, or bi, or asexual, and "gay" shouldn't be edited out because of that.

In that case then the rest of the racial slurs should also be unbanned because being called a "chink" for example and it being blocked out would show children that theres something wrong with being asian?

At the risk of oversimplifying.

Chink is different territory from "gay". People from china do not want to be called chinks. Gay people would like their choice to be recognized. Hence: Gays would like to be called gay.

No, because that's actually a racial slur. "Gay" isn't an insult by default now unless your tone of voice suggests it. It's a word that means "homosexual". "Gay" can be used to insult, of course, but so can "white", "black", "Asian", "smart", "leftie", "girl", "boy", and a lot of other words. Ever heard a group of guys use the phrase "you're such a girl!"? Ever heard a group of black kids use "that's so white, man"? How about girls using "oh my god you're such a boy!"

EDIT: Also what Panzer said. Gay people want to be called gay, they call themselves gay, almost all of them tell people that they are to be called gay. White people don't want to be called "crackers". Girls want to be called girls, just don't call guys girls in an insulting way because that's implying that being a girl is bad.

To add to your description: imho, calling a chinaman a 'chink' is like calling a girl a 'bitch'.

I removed lesbian, gay, bisexual etc. I think it's wrong to disallow those words. The swear filter can't catch everything, of course, so in the reinforcing it is going to be a bit of a lost cause.

I'm for an ignore chat / allow chat feature for each player to choose. I have been known to close chat completely to focus only on laser tag.

I would not, however, offer server hosts a feature to mute specific players from each other or from the group as the hosts that use settings to annoy would take full advantage of breaking conversations.

I do believe as every day goes by that we need this more and more. And more. And I do agree the host shouldn't have absolute control over it all.

I agree with everything. I think that everyone should have control of what they want to see ingame, and I find it very annoying when I am trying to play, and someone is swearing at me, or spamming in the chat. I also agree that server hosts shouldn't have the power to mute people for everyone else. While it would be nice sometimes, it would get abused constantly.
Thanks.

Why not evict the newton cookies out of the person? Seems like if their the problem might as well kick them out!

Oh yeah, where's my hi? I was the first to make you cuss in a game two years ago, that deserves some recognition...

They're*

And the reason is that when you're not the host, you can't evict them. And if you're busy actually playing while other players date, it can be hard to concentrate. If you could ignore them, then you wouldn't have to just 'grin and bear it' so to speak.
Heh. She shoulda put "**** u stryker" to make you happy

Hi stryker.
1. The host could be afk or mute, and you could have no control over eviction.
2.The host could be friends with the person you want to ignore, thus not evict them.
3.IP changers! get evicted/banned, then come in with a different IP and again and again... ignoring would just be easier.

I suppose it could prevent new problems from occuring, but you still have the original: you have someone you'd like to mute. Unless they are obviously trolling you, I don't see myself ever using this feature, personally.

I'm not against it, but not quite for it either. I'm indifferent.
