Ok, the daughterboard is fixed-ish... for some weird reason it doesn't work at altitude :/ Fortunately, I don't live at 10,000 feet :)

Updates:
1. Created Soundcloud Account. For a sampling of what we're doing as a project, visit our page here. (note that there's not much there right now :)
2. What kind of sounds are you guys looking for in ME? We have a couple different ideas for stuff, including (but most definitely not limited to) abstract background music, some sort of "radio" with various different sounds, as well as some other ideas.
3. If any of y'all want to join the sound team, let me know :)
TTFN!

<update>
As of right now... WE HAVE A DEV TEAM!!
yeah, maybe I got a little too excited, but this is pretty cool :)
Dev Team members:
ffroggy

CharlesHadouken (anyone ever call you Dooku... I might start doing that.. no offense intended or anything, it's just shorter than CharlesHadouken :P)

cheezburger

Ender (Classical guitar ftw! I love guitar, but I can only play ukulele right now :)

ssemodnar (can I call you sissy, or maybe sessy? Again, it's easier lol) (also, ooh! singing! there's huge potential for some awesome stuff there)

PanzerAce (Clarinet baby! and piano too...)

If anyone else wants to join, please comment and/or shoot me a PM, k? Wow, I can't wait to get started!

Warning: As of right now, my daughterboard decided to go and break on my laptop and so that unfortunately means I won't be able to hear any sound until I get a new one... until that time, I am deaf :P

Music types: Sheesh, Idk! Just about anything would work, I guess :) I was thinking more on the abstract side (look up the music for this app called Machinarium for what I mean) But I am totally open to suggestions. Maybe if we had a repository of songs that was split up into different genres, and people could switch them depending on what they felt like listening to... I honestly don't know :)
</update>

Hey guys! so my elaborate scheme to leave the website seems to have failed miserably... but it has given me opportunity to give this whole new mars explorer thing some good thought. I was thinking the other day about what Mars is still waaay outdated on, and I found the answer just a little while ago!
To put things simply, Mars' music is in the past. No getting around it my friends, with a new Mars Explorer comes new advances, and music should be included in this upgrade. With that in mind, I have a proposal to make. Without further ado, I give you my latest idea: the Music project.

Here's my idea:
One of my personal favorite games is Minecraft. when I first got it, I didn't know there was music, and so it lead to an exciting discovery for me. What we could really use is a more abstract music scheme for the game, both in the menu, and the in-game experience.

So here is my proposal: Now that Mars is open-source, I would like to assemble a team of people to begin working on this project. We submit the music in a specific format to the dev team, who then adds the music into the game. If mars was still scripted in JS, I could do the scripting myself, but I don't know any C languages yet. The music would shuffle through, with a pseudo-random timer adding a space in-between the songs.

That being said, is there a general interest for something like this? Anyone want to join the music dev team? Can I get a general concensus on the idea? Good, bad, otherwise?

"...with a pseudo-random timer adding a space in-between the songs."

Please no, I really dislike that about Minecraft. Five second pauses are OK, but not 1 to 5 minutes randomly selected. I really enjoy the music in Minecraft, but I have the audio muted because of this.

I am taking AP Music Theory at my school and will probably take composition classes in addition later on. I did intend on running the music compartment for Mars 3.0, but you guys seem quite ready without me. Unfortunately, I cannot commit to anything now, but you should still go for it!

If you guys notate your compositions, I'd be glad to look them over :)

Oh, I would love to participate! :D
I have tried writing some music, I wouldn't say that I'm the BEST but I can do some stuff :)

I play viola, and also am pretty good at singing, but I am not sure how I would record anything...

If it is useful, I know of a website that is called "noteflight" where you can compose music and listen to how it sounds (but it is pretty basic unless you buy it) but you can also make it so that other people can hear how it sounds as well :) I don't have garage band or anything, so I might use that to compose things.

If anybody needs some classical guitar thrown in I'll just be over in the corner... :)
But I can't really compose, so no help from me in that direction.
Experience: eleven years.

Also, when Ssemodnar says she's pretty good at singing, SHE'S GOOD AT SINGING OKAY!?

i will be honest.  i think that the mars music that we have already is perfect.  its probably because of nostalgia but even if new music gets put it, i will still probably just listen to the oridginal songs cause they sound soo mighty fine.

wif dat being said i made a little tune that i thought could be used for like the server menu or something.
still a work in progress.  its very hard to make ambient background music that doesnt demand yo attention.

Well first off, that's an epic song :) I gotta say, I love it! However, I think it fits an 8-bit 2d arcade scroller a bit better than an elegant 3d beautifulicious game, you know? Just my thoughts :) That should be an option for the music, though, if people want it :)

Today, in an attempt to avoid homework, I decided to try composing to see if I had any potential. Within two hours, I figured out how to use an online program called Noteflight and compose a simple piece (about a minute long). Considering it's my first time, I'm happy with the results. You can check out the final product here: http://www.noteflight.com/scores/view/4ecd16872456805e28125f4005925c4c35e59532
