A Newspaper... for Carbon Combat!

Community,

Recently I was looking at the Mars Explorer forum, and I had an idea. Actually, TheCyberMan had the idea before me, but I decided to use it for Carbon Combat as well. This idea is the creation of a newspaper for all the people of Carbon Combat to read and contribute to.

On the Mars Explorer forum, it is known as "The Weekly Martian." Now, I know that I am a pretty busy person, and I am sure many of you are too! I think that it would be very good to publish the next article of this newspaper once a month, and that would be sufficient stimulus for the community.

This newspaper would be made up of community contributed articles. This paper will include many of the same categories as a regular paper, only this paper would be all about Carbon Combat! Some of the categories will probably include:
  • Breaking News
  • Upcoming Events
  • From the Mod Database
  • Fact of the Month
  • Latest Carbon Combat Release (pros, cons, communal opinions)
If anyone has more ideas for categories, please suggest them! This is only a suggestion of categories, and these are only coming from one person. As well, not all of these categories have to be filled. There may only be four, or even three of these categories filled.

If you are contributing an article, I would like you to remember a mnemonic to help write successful articles. This mnemonic is TFW. TFW stands for three things: Think, Formulate, Write.

Think: think about what ideas you are about to present, and how you want to present them. Will you use a famous quote to illustrate your point? Will you use a strong opening sentence? Will you use repeated questions, that makes the reader think? Think about what you want us to know, and the most effective way of letting us understand.

Formulate: Now, you need to formulate your ideas. When writing a successful article or comment, organize it into paragraphs, one paragraph per main idea. This is the most understandable way to present information, and most people will understand this way easily.

Write: Now, you need to write your post! Using what you have thought about and formulated, this should be relatively easy, because you probably know what will be in what paragraph. Here, pay attention to grammar! It is much easier for us to read something with proper spelling and punctuation, than something with terrible spelling and grammar.

Here are the things that a successful article should include (please note that these are not MANDATORY, they are just suggestions.):
  • Opening Sentence/Paragraph
  • Signposts
  • Paragraphs explaining your signposts (supporting details)
  • Examples
  • Conclusion (sum up points, wrap the article up in one paragraph)
I am sure you have all learned that in English class, but it doesn't hurt to re-state it. Yes, even I need the odd reminder about spelling/grammar concepts.

If you are willing to contribute an article, please PM me with your idea. I will let you know my opinions about it, and then you are free to write! Please remember that your posts do not have to follow the categories presented earlier. They may be about whatever you choose, although if it is something different, please check the idea with me first.

Tell me what you think of this newspaper idea. If it is not accepted, I will remove this post.

Sincerely,
[Mod] Apophis

I would LOVE this. Might I suggest however we put this instead of the forums on something everybody can edit? Perhaps some magical website where we can create articals on Carbon Combat, and anybody can edit them for free? It could be devided into different sections, each with a heading, and have a table of contents for easy access. We could add pictures and slideshows and other visuals so it looks great, and we could have lots of tools to make it quick and easy to edit. Oh, if only such place existed...oh wait, what about the wiki?

FatCatAttack,

While reading you comment I was thinking the wiki the whole time.

As a date format, I suggest "Carbonian times; -month here-" that way they can easily be searched and added to category pages.

FatCatAttack,

You have a pretty good idea, but if everyone could edit, people would simply delete ideas that they do not like. It is a good idea in principle, but in action, I doubt it would work flawlessly. I was hoping that people would send their articles to me, and I would export the entire paper in a downloadable .pdf format. If desired, it will also be avaliable in .docx, .doc, or .pages. If a different extension is desired, I will try to make that work out.

I like the idea of using the wiki, but personally, I believe that it could be published by one player (this may alternate) once a month. What do you think of this idea?

Sincerely,
[Mod] Apophis

Hmm...actually have to think about this for a second.

How about this: anybody can submit articles to the paper to be published, and the editors decide which articles can be published. Editors are allowed to submit articles themselves and any submitted article is given to the editorial staff with the full creative writes, allowing the editorial staff to change the article in any way they deem necessary. However editors can vote in agreement that should an editor be abusing/not doing his job they can kick him off the paper.

It would be hard using the wiki with multiple people but not releasing it to everyone however. Might I suggest the almighty Dropbox?

P.S. I'm actually pretty loaded right now with my Carbon Combat duties, so I don't think I plan on joining the paper.

hello FatCat and Apophis,

About the problem with the wiki and every one deleting stuff they do not like.  I can lock a topic so that only people with certain rank can edit a topic, or I (or other mods) can do a rollback.  A roll back is where a change that was made is deleted.  I still think the wiki is a good place for this.  It would also attract people there and the wiki would become more complete.

Nattyfrank,

Thank you for informing me about the rollback. I like this idea, and I thought, "Why not publish the paper in two places? The wiki, and in .pdf format from dropbox?"

In using the wiki, I personally believe like nattfrank: It would help to popularize the wiki, and make more people use it.

Sincerely,

Well I think this is a go for you Apophis. We got a good majority agreement, so you can start recruiting/writing. I can be more than happy to structure the paper to your request with a template on the wiki so the only thing left to do is to select a date for the first release and start typing.

Hey! I'm glad you like the idea. I find a newspaper would be a great way to keep the community active, in touch, and on their toes.

I'd love to help you design and create this paper :)

Wait, if the paper is monthly then how will breaking news work? Kinda ruins the point. Unless we want to make this a whole news station, then I don't think that will work.

Hm, now I can see what a news station about CC would be like...Moderator elections, illegal immigrants from Mars Explorer, farming scandals...

Hmmm... Perhaps the weekly martian (or whatever it soon will become) should be published simultaneously and singularly with the CC times. That is to say that they can be published together. That way if one lacks content then the other can fill in the gap, and it may be easier to keep track of. Thoughts?

Usually I don't like how U2M bumps random posts but this is a project we need to get back on track with, if we actually plan on doing it at all. My guess is that CarbonFest will be filling Apophis's plate for the next few months so the Carbonian Times might be best of in someone else's hands. We would need someone with good grammer, an ability to look from a neutral viewpoint, and time to spare.

Can anyone think of anyone willing to edit a several page long paper?
