It was now a bitter cold morning and I awoke and sat around a campfire just outside my tent.
I haven't been able to sleep for 4 days now, and its getting more difficult to hold a pen without falling asleep and waking a momment later.
I ate hardtack, dried fruit, and a little bread that I dipped in my coffee to make it the bread a litlle easier to eat and that whatever bugs that may have been inside, were now out.
While eating, I talked to soldiers and told storiesof what life was like before this brutal war.
Suddenly, we heard a few shots go off behind us and we all burts into a panic.
A man threw me a musket and said I needed to defend myself for this small battle but, I never wanted to fire a single round at any man.
I fired. Imediatly I heard the cries of a young british soldier, who I hit in his shoulder, that was bleeding terribly.
I couldn't believe what I had done but, that wasn't where I was aiming so the musket was inaccurate.
The few of us that were once sitting around a campfire eating our hardtack and drinking our coffee, were now stuck reloading and hoping for backup.
Just then, we heard footsteps and turned to look at rebel soldiers who stood behind us taking aim as we reloaded and fired.
When one rebel soldier decided to fire next to my ear, I had gotton a bad pain in my head. When he fired, I lost some of my hearing in my left ear but, I never gave up.
This lasted fifteen minutes and then we took there things, gathered up our gear, and moved to our next location.
( This was written to look as if this was not a soldier in the war but, a newspaper writer who had traveled with this regiment of the American side. Thats why I never said he was a soldier or something to make it seem that way.)
